What are dental implants?
Dental Implants are the most effective way to replace your missing teeth to achieve optimal functionality. They provide this function by replacing the roots of your teeth with a screw-like implant to which a replacement crown can be safely secured.
Why would I need dental implants?
Despite the significant improvements in dental technologies, there are still a large amount of Australians suffering from tooth loss. This is most commonly caused by dental decay, gingivitis and injuries. Missing teeth have long been corrected by the fitting of dentures or false teeth. The annoyance that false teeth cause is well documented; cleaning, maintenance, loose fitting, movement, trapping food, feeling self-conscious etc. With the care and precision provided by the team here at Lumiere Dental Care, patients can feel confident that their needs will be treated.

What is the procedure?
The dental implant procedure takes place in the dentist chair under an appropriate sedation.Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks we maximise the chances and success by using the latest technology and proper planning. Lumière Dental Centre uses a three step process known as a ‘staged surgery’.
- The first stage involves the extraction of the damaged tooth, if it still remains, and placing the implant fixture into the canal where your tooth was previously positioned.
- During the second stage Dr Elkhatib ensures the implant has integrated to your bone and an abutment can be attached to the implant.
- The final stage comes after the healing process is complete, a prosthetic tooth can now be secured to the abutment.
- We are able in a lot of cases to immediately place a dental implant after a tooth extraction which has shown to yield a very successful outcome. However, that would have to assessed and planned before the procedure and decision would be made during the surgery.
What are the options for dental implants?
Depending on your oral circumstance, there are a number of different dental implant options that can be tailored to provide full function of your mouth. Dr Elkhatib will assess your oral state and provide a recommendation and quote to suit.
Single Dental Implants
These are often preferred option to replace a single tooth over other treatments as they provide durability, functionality and longevity. Several benefits stem from a singular dental implant over a bridge, the most prominent benefit being an implant removes the need to shape and shave down neighboring teeth in order to be fitted with a bridge.
Multiple Dental Implants
A trusted option to replace multiple lost teeth. Multiple dental implants are one of the most popular options among multiple tooth losses as they provide a long term solution for your missing teeth. With multiple dental implants you can feel confident that your teeth will be replaced with a secure restoration.
All-on-4
All-on-4 is a recognised solution used for the restoration of all teeth on your upper or lower jaw. All-on-4 utilises a single bridge of crows custom created for your mouth, this bridge(tray of crowns) is often fitted with a prosthetic gum line and is then secured to your jaw using 4 or more implant screws. Dr Elkhatib will assess your jaw bone and needs when determining the number and appropriate placement of implants to secure your restoration.
Who is suitable for dental implants?
To be suitable for dental implants you need to:
- Be fit and of reasonable health
- Have adequate jaw bone structure (if not a bone graft may be needed)
- Be free of gum disease or periodontitis
- Avoid smoking where possible as this can hinder recovery time
